Privacy notice
Short, because there is not much to say: no accounts, no forms, no advertising. A count of what gets read, and that is all.

A quick note
This notice covers The Engineer's Notebook at blogs.shrikumarsharma.in. The portfolio at www.shrikumarsharma.in has its own privacy notice; the two sites share an analytics project, described below.
Who runs this site
Shree Kumar Sharma, an individual in Gurugram, India, writes and runs it. There is no company behind it.
What gets collected
- Reading statistics. Which pages and notes are opened, how far down a note you read, which links you follow, and roughly where in the world the visit came from, which PostHog works out from your IP address.
- A random visitor id in a cookie, so a return visit is counted as the same person, including when you move between this site and the portfolio.
- Search words typed into the notebook's own search box or a note's search, to see what people look for and do not find.
- Server logs kept by the host, as with any website.
Nothing else. There are no accounts, no comment forms and no newsletter sign-up.
What I do with it
Decide what to write next, fix notes that people abandon halfway, and notice when something breaks. The data is never sold, never used for advertising and never shared beyond the services below.
Third-party services
- Cloudflare: Hosts the site and serves every page. Standard request logs: IP address, browser and the page asked for. Their privacy policy.
- PostHog (United States): Counts pages read, how far, and which links were followed. A random id, the pages and events above, coarse location from your IP. Reached through this site's own /ingest address. Their privacy policy.
- Google Fonts: Serves the typefaces inside most notes (not the site around them). Your IP address and browser, as with any web request; no cookie. Their privacy policy.
- Google Analytics: Visit statistics, only while switched on for this site. A random id, the pages visited, coarse location. Their privacy policy.
How long data is kept
Analytics events are kept for as long as the analytics project keeps them (PostHog's retention for the plan in use), and the visitor id cookie lasts a year. Host logs follow Cloudflare's retention.
Your choices
- Do Not Track: if your browser sends it, PostHog records nothing.
- Block or clear cookies for shrikumarsharma.in in your browser; the site works the same without them.
- A content blocker that blocks analytics will stop it here too.
- Opt out on this browser: open any page with
?ph_optout=1at the end of the address.?ph_optout=0turns it back on. - Google Analytics, when it is switched on, does not read Do Not Track or
?ph_optout; blocking cookies, a content blocker or Google's opt-out add-on stops it.
Security
Every page is served over HTTPS with strict transport security, and analytics travels through this site's own address rather than straight to a third party. The site holds no personal data of its own to lose.
Links to other sites
Notes link to documentation, projects and articles elsewhere. Those sites have their own policies; this one stops at the link.
Updates to this notice
When what the site collects changes, this page changes with it and the date at the top moves. The cookie policy lists every item stored in your browser.
